The Master of Teaching and Learning (ECE) features strong professional experience components including 33 weeks attendance at a centre mentored by an Associate Teacher in the centre, and 80 days of practicum throughout the program, where you are supported and assessed on your practice by an NZTC Lecturer and your Associate Teacher. During your professional experience you are exposed to a range of early childhood settings, age groups, teaching approaches and philosophies.

Course Overview

NZTC Master of Teaching and Learning (ECE) is approved by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. There are strong strands of research, pedagogical knowledge combined with professional practice at the master’s level. In the centre-based mode of delivery, where the majority of study time is undertaken in an early childhood centre, there are opportunities for employment based on the centre’s needs for staff. Graduates are eligible to apply for New Zealand Teacher registration and provisional certification. Starting your career as a graduate from the NZTC Master of Teaching and Learning (ECE) provides you with opportunities to be a leader in your centre from the outset. With your strong pedagogical and research background, you will make valuable contributions to your centre in senior roles.

Entry Requirements

Academic

  • Applicants for the Master of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood Education) must hold a Level 7 degree with a B+ average (75%) or higher.

  • Special consideration is given to applicants with strong academic performance and relevant work experience.

  • Note: Detailed academic entry criteria is determined by our admissions team.

English language competency

  • PTE Academic 65 (IELTS 7.0) with no band lower than 65 or equivalent test approved by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and NZQA

Other

  • You will be subject to satisfactory police checks, professional referee reports and a visual interview. The required documents are listed on the conditional offer letter issued by the admissions team.

SCHOOL APPLICATION/ ENROLLMENT

Start your journey by applying to a registered New Zealand institution. The ePathways Education Department will assist you with the entire school application process, ensuring all required documents are submitted and your spot in the program is secured.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST

To study in New Zealand, you'll need to prove your English proficiency. EPathways offers an in-house one-on-one online review (at least 30 hours) to help you prepare for the English proficiency tests (IELTS or PTE). This personalized support ensures that you are well-prepared and confident in passing your exam!

DOCUMENTATION

ePathways will assist you in gathering, organizing, and checking all necessary documents for your visa application based on the checklist given by the LIA. We will ensure everything is in order to speed up the approval process.

VISA LODGEMENT

Once your documentation is ready, the Licensed Immigration Adviser will lodge your visa application for both you and your partner (if applicable). This includes the submission, processing, and follow-up.

VISA OUTCOME

After submitting your visa application, you will receive your visa outcome. EPathways provides the following support:

  • Visa Outcome Communication: EPathways will inform you as soon as the outcome of your visa application is received. If approved, you’ll receive your visa, and if additional information is needed, ePathways will assist you in gathering the required documents.

  • Visa Follow-Up Support: If your visa is delayed or rejected, ePathways will help you identify the reason and advise you on how to address the issue. If necessary, they will assist in lodging a visa appeal or resubmission.

  • Document Handover: Upon approval, you’ll receive your official visa approval letter, which you’ll need for travel and school registration.
